Have you ever walked into a space and felt or sensed heavy, dark, dirty or oppressive energy? Maybe you found your mood changed after being there, maybe you felt drained, anxious or even ill. Maybe your emotions suddenly erupted in an overwhelming outburst of rage, pain or sadness that you didn't quite know the cause of. Perhaps you felt a headache coming on, a wave of nausea take over, or maybe you felt dizzy out of nowhere.... Any or all of these symptoms could be your body's way of reacting to negative energy.
Energy can affect us in various ways and on various levels. Mentally, emotionally, physically and even spiritually, energy in our environment or from other people can influence us and even change us if we don't know how to recognise it, clear it, transmute it or heal it.
Noticing Energy
Of course not all energy is negative. Have you ever been around someone or visited a place that felt sacred, peaceful, joyful, or even magickal? Have you ever been somewhere or around someone and felt suddenly uplifted, grateful, loved or safe? Noticing how people and places make us feel is the first step in developing our intuition and discernment. What you do about it, will determine whether you truly trust yourself, your body and your intuition. Ignoring the signs we receive can put us in danger spiritually, mentally, emotionally and sometimes physically. And it also signals to your body and your intuition that you aren't listening, so they may not send you signals in future...

If someone kept serving you expired or poisoned food, would you keep eating it once you became aware? Or would you take heed of your body's signals and steer clear from that person and their food in the future? It's the same with energy. Once you know that a person or place embodies energy that's harmful to you and is negatively impacting you each time you visit, why would you continue to entertain it?
Sometimes, we are the ones carrying negative energy. Sometimes our homes are the places that others don't like visiting or that are making us sick because we haven't stopped to take stock of the energy in a while. The experiences we go through can impact and shape our energy, such as loss, trauma, grief, anger or resentment. All these things can shift us from a light space to a dark one and whatever affects us will naturally also influence our space or environment.

Spiritual Maintenance
When performing spiritual cleansings for clients, I am often faced with the same reaction or perception; cleansing my space is a once off task and because you have cleansed it for me now, I won't need to worry about it again in future... While I can understand this thought process, it is unfortunately not accurate. I usually use the metaphor of a dirty house; most people clean their house weekly at the bare minimum. When you sweep, or mop your floors you know that you'll inevitably need to do it again in a few days to clear any dirt that has been brought into the house. Dusting is also a regular task to prevent a build-up of dirt and allergies. Spiritual cleansing follows the same principle. It is not a once off task, but should be a regular practice to release and clear any energetic accumulation that you are carrying or your home is storing.

Whether you are bringing energies home with you or others are bringing them into your home, there is always a chance of energetic attachments or debris accumulating in your space and your auric field. It's up to you to maintain your energy and that of your home by being consistent in your cleansing and spiritual hygiene practices.

5 Simple Ways to Clear or Remove Negative Energy
Below, I will share five ways that you can cleanse your space and your energy; allowing you to feel lighter, think more clearly and see results where previously you may have been stuck. It's important to remember that spiritual cleansing should be performed regularly, just like regular hygiene practices. You don't need to wait for the energy to build up before you decide to do something about it. Regularly cleansing yourself and your home, either weekly or monthly, will most certainly improve your quality of life, health, relationships and your environment.
While the list below is itemized for easier reading, it's important to note that spiritual cleansing is not about doing just one thing in particular. It is a collection of many little things and consistent routines to see long term, desired results.
Enjoy!
1. Cleaning and Organising Your Home to Clear Negative Energy
Many people aren't aware that we are a reflection of our environment and vice versa. If you have noticed a slump in your energy recently, it may be time to spring clean or declutter your home. Cleaning and organising are wonderful ways to shift and spruce up the energy of your environment, and in turn, to elevate your energy and vibration as well. Cleaning and clearing up things in our physical environment has a huge impact on us, in terms of sleep, mental clarity and emotional and physical wellbeing. When your space is clean and organized, your energy will naturally improve, and good vibes will be easier to maintain.

Feng Shui Tips to Enhance Energy Flow

It's no secret that the Chinese practice of Feng Shui can improve different areas of one's life. Using Feng Shui in your home or office allows for a better flow of Chi so that there is no stuck or dirty energy present. This can include rearranging furniture, using specific colours, enhancing certain directional points, using statues and more. The practice of Feng Shui is not easy though. True Feng Shui takes time to learn, and there are many different viewpoints and divisions to learn from. So it's very important to do extensive research before just following one persons ideas or advice. Using the wrong elements or placements in your home or office could be devastating to your finances, love life or health.
2. Using Plants and Nature To Clear Negative Energy
Having plants in the home or even having a garden where you can get back to nature is very helpful in uplifting and grounding one's energy. Not everyone is lucky enough to have grass to walk on or a garden to sit in, but bringing the outside in by using plants in your décor is a great way to shift the energy in your home. Plants not only transform CO2, they are also great at alchemizing the vibrational energy around them and transmuting negative energies. Do some research as to what plants you could use to transform your space and invite positive energy into your home and your life.

Plants to Absorb Negative Energy
Here are some plant/ herb options to help raise the vibe of your space -

Sage
Rosemary
Lavender
Patchouli
Hyssop
Basil
Jasmine
Aloe
Mugwort
African Violet
3. Using Sound to Shift Energy
Using sound in our spiritual practices is not a new concept; this tool has been available to us since the dawn of man. Sound, voice, music and instruments are all tools used for activating and clearing energy. Of course, sounds have their own frequencies too, so the music you listen to in private and the background songs you play at home will all have an impact on your personal energetic frequency and your environment.

Listening to low vibrational, profane or chaotic music will naturally negatively affect you and your environment. It will bring the vibe down, which will be evident within your environment as well as your thoughts, mood and temperament. Listening to or playing high-frequency music, happy beats or even prayers, for example, will elevate the energy surrounding you and your home.
If you don't like music, then simply saying prayers or mantras aloud, and even clapping your hands loudly as you walk around the home, can also shift and alter the energy and get things moving in the right direction again.
Using Music to Raise the Vibe
Certain instruments can and will raise your vibration. If this is more your thing, you can find videos on YouTube and allow these to play in your home -
Singing bowls
Harp
Violin
Gong
Flute
Bells
Rattles
Drums
Tuning Fork

High Vibrational Sounds
Leave music playing while you're out or at home. You can also leave music to play softly while falling asleep. Here are some other options for music to raise the vibe -
Gospel
Frequency Music
Celtic
Meditations
Classical
Christmas Songs
Prayers read aloud
Gregorian Chants
Buddhist Monks

4. Using Salt to Cleanse Your Energy

The spiritual power of salt has been known for centuries in various spiritual faiths and traditions, yet this simple tool is often overlooked. Salt can be used in various ways to cleanse oneself of negative energy. It can also be placed in the home to absorb unwanted energies or to ward off spiritual attacks. Using salt in your bath is a great way to cleanse yourself. This practice is known as a spiritual bath. While there are many variations and intentions behind spiritual baths, you can choose how simple or elaborate your mixture will be. Adding salt to your floor wash or cleaning water when cleaning your home is also a good idea to clear your space of energetic debris and negativity. Using salt in this way once a week will assist in cleansing and clearing negative or stagnant energies from you and your home.

Spiritual Bath or Floor Wash Recipes

To make a spiritual bath or floor wash, use 1 or 2 cups of coarse salt, pink salt or sea salt as a base. Then add the carefully selected herbs, oils or other dried ingredients that you feel cater to your cause and intention. When making a spiritual bath, be very careful about what ingredients you are using; when it comes to the skin, natural is always best! Some herbs or oils may cause an allergic reaction if you are using them for the first time. Some ingredients may also have unwanted or unexpected reactions when mixed together. The same goes for making a floor wash; if you have babies or pets in the home, be sure to keep them in mind when picking your ingredients.
Do your research and use with caution.
5. Using Sage or Smudging to Remove Negative Energy
Using Sage or other herbs to cleanse your space with smoke, has become more popular in recent years. Indigenous people however, have known about the power of these tools and have been using them for centuries. There are various herbs one can use for smudging practices. There are also different types of Sage native to various regions or countries, which are also associated with alternative uses and intentions. So, before you go and spend a fortune on the ever-popular 'Californian White Sage' , do your research and see what herbs resonate with you and your current needs, as well as what is most affordable and accessible to you based on where you live.

Dangers of Sage or Smudging
There are some things people won't tell you about using Sage. The act of smudging a home or a person is not as simple as waving around a lit bundle of herbs. This ancient practice goes deeper and requires one to be crystal clear about their intentions and what they are trying to achieve. Another important factor which is often overlooked, is one's faith and connection to a higher power. If you are not calling on God or a Divine being of light, then how exactly are you planning to clear the darkness?

Just as with other spiritual practices, there are risks involved when one decides to do a cleansing using Sage, Palo Santo or other smudging tools. If there is negative energy or an entity present, these tools will essentially smoke it out, naturally causing a reaction, where things will escalate. Which is unfortunately what most people do not understand about these techniques; the Sage doesn't get rid of the entity, it riles them up and brings them out so that YOU, as the person doing the ritual (with the help of a higher power), can then usher it out and clear the space.

Unfinished Business
When things go wrong and people start a cleansing ritual but do not complete it, due to fear or other distractions, a door is left open, and a battle has essentially started that these individuals then have no clue how to navigate or win on their own. Which is why most people then start calling Sage or smudging practices evil... When in fact the Sage is simply a tool, like holy water, and just like any other tool, you shouldn't use it if you're not educated or equipped to do so.
Important To Remember
Whatever spiritual exercises, techniques or practices you would like to try, make sure you are entering into these knowing as much as you can. Be crystal clear about what you are trying to achieve and be intentional about what you are doing, and why. There's no point using Sage or any other tools simply because it's trending and you saw a video on TikTok... Trust me when I say, no good will come of that. When it comes to spirituality, you need to do your research and be prepared for any situation. Do not simply follow others blindly. This is not to scare you, but rather to inform you, so that you get the best out of your spiritual practices.

*On a side note, please be mindful about who and what you are watching on social media and as entertainment in general. Negative energy and even entities can be transferred through movies, games, vlogs, music, readings, etc.

Spiritual Cleansing FAQ
What is Spiritual Cleansing?
Spiritual Cleansing is the act of clearing away negative or harmful energies from yourself and your environment. There are many ways to do this and different people, faiths and traditions utilize various tools in their spiritual cleansing practices. Some common methods include Saging or smudging, using salt for washing or using sound to clear and remove negative energy.
How Often Should One Perform a Spiritual Cleansing?
Spiritual hygiene practices just like cleaning should be performed regularly. Cleansing your energy and your space when you've had a bad day is always a good idea. But you should aim to perform a spiritual cleansing within your home once a week or at the very least once a month. Our homes are a reflection of our energy, so leaving negative energy to accumulate will cause a build-up of heavy or dark energy that will in turn affect us and others in the home.
Are There Dangers Associated with Spiritual Cleansing?
The goal of spiritual cleansing is to eradicate and clear negative, dark or harmful energetic influences from yourself or your space. So, in theory this should not be dangerous. However, performing a spiritual cleansing when you are not knowledgeable on the process or the tools you are using can be very dangerous. Especially if there are dark entities or demons present in the home. Another factor to consider when doing spiritual work is your faith. If you do not believe in a Higher / Divine authority and you have no connection to one, then doing spiritual cleansing or any other rituals will in fact only aggravate and escalate the situation. Just like any other practice knowledge is power, so do your research and set clear intentions when doing any spiritual work.
